MasterWorks FAQS

Using the Magic Wand in QuiltWorks and MasterWorks

The Magic Wand is a very helpful tool that is included in both QuiltWorks and MasterWorks. With just click of your mouse it can give you the outline necessary to create appliqué, red work or full embroidery designs if you are using MasterWorks. When using this tool there is one thing to keep in mind, the closer you zoom in on the area you wish to select, the better your final result will be.

Registering MasterWorks without an internet connection

If you do not have an internet connection you will need to register either by phone or email. The number to call for phone registration is 1-866-678-7638. You will need to have your serial number and site code. You will be called back with the site key necessary to obtain your license.

You can also send an email to activate@designersgallerysoftware.com. Be sure to include your serial number and site code in the email. Your site key will be emailed to you. Customer service hours are 9am-4pm eastern time M-F, excluding Canadian holidays.

What are the red and green dots that show up on my design?

The red and green dots are the entry and exit points for the stitching area. With designs created in MasterWorks you can move these entry and exits points to help minimize jump stitches or to prevent the running stitches from showing under some of the more open fills that are built into MasterWorks.

How do I change recipe for the design I am creating?

There are two ways to get a new page within MasterWorks. If you select the new page icon in the tool bar, you will get a generic new page. However, if you select "File", "New", you will get a new page dialog box that will allow you to select the recipe for your new page. You will need to select a new page in this manner each time you wish to use a recipe.

Can I remove the stitches from behind my buttonhole?

Yes, if you select both the buttonhole and the region it is within, right mouse click and select combine. This will remove the stitches from behind your buttonhole. This works great when creating button-on accents.

I have a desktop and a laptop, how many computers can I have MasterWorks installed on?

You can install MasterWorks on both of these computers. Your license allows you to use the program on only one computer at a time. When you want to use MasterWorks on the laptop for instance, you would need to follow the license transfer procedure, outlined on pages 16-20 of your manual, to move the license from your desktop computer to the laptop.

I have a laptop I use when I travel and go to class; can I activate a license on this computer as well?

You can install MasterWorks on both of these computers. Your license allows you to use the program on only one computer at a time. When you want to use MasterWorks on the laptop for instance, you would need to follow the license transfer procedure, outlined on pages 16-20 of your manual, to move the license from your desktop computer to the laptop.

I uninstalled and reinstalled my MasterWorks and I lost my license. What do I do?

You should not reinstall MasterWorks unless someone from Baby Lock technical suggests you do so. As you found out, when you reinstall MasterWorks with the numerical key, it will be lost because the program no longer has the same site code. *This product has been retired. No additional activation can be added. If you have an activation code we will try to work with you to the product activated

I am trying to license my MasterWorks and it keeps telling me that my serial number is wrong; I am copying the serial number exactly from the box. Can you help?

Actually you need to enter the serial number exactly as it is shown on the CD jewel case [plastic case the CD comes in] with all the dashes. Also pay close attention to the use of the number "0" zero vs. the letter "O" & the number "1" vs. the letter "I". What are bitmaps and vector files?

Bitmap images are resolution dependent images that consist of a fixed number of pixels. Because of this, they can lose detail when they are scaled. Vector images are also referred to as line art or object-based graphics which are defined by mathematical equations. This allows them to be scaled and still retain their crisp outlines and details.

I have converted a .jpg file to a .wmf file using Paint Shop pro. However, when I use "import artwork" in MasterWorks, the file will not open. Why is that?

This happens because the .jpg file is a bitmap image or raster file. While this file can be converted to a .wmf file format is can not be converted into the vector file needed to import into MasterWorks. Vector images are also referred to as line art or object based graphics. When a raster file is converted it can not take the pixels of that file and connect them into the objects of vector files.

How do I access my TrueType fonts in MasterWorks?

If you're using the TEXT option in MasterWorks, there is a check box option on the TEXT PROPERTY box labeled "TTF". Check that box if you want MasterWorks to display your system TrueType fonts. You can then select and create lettering from those TrueType fonts found on your system. You may also digitize TrueType fonts yourself by using the File > Import TTF option to bring the text into MasterWorks as artwork segments.

Is there a way to change a JPG image to a WMF image?

MasterWorks has a built in "Vectorizor" that does just that - it traces raster (bitmap) images by detecting color changes to create vector (scaleable) artwork segments. This vectorizor is used when you select the Auto ArtWork Wizard, or the AutoDigitizing Wizard. The Magic Wands also trace the part of a raster image you click on when you open it as a backdrop.

There are also conversion programs which automatically trace raster graphics (jpg) to create vector data (wmf). You can find these programs by doing a web search using your favorite search engine. Use the keywords "convert raster to vector". Read carefully to make sure the program will trace the raster image to create the new vector image, and not simply export a vector file type containing only raster data.

I am having difficulty using some of the designs from the MasterWorks DVD workbook. Are replacement files available?

Download these files to use in place of the starfish.blf and butterflies.blf files. The satin fill in some areas has been replaced with a smooth standard fill.

I need to transfer my MasterWorks™ license to a new computer running Vista. Do I need to do any special other than what is in the manual?

Please use a newly formatted floppy disk or USB device to perform the license transfer. Please make sure you update both computers with the latest appropriate build for the Windows version that each computer is running. Make sure both computers are running the most current version of MasterWorks. After updating both computers to the same version number and build number of Masterworks, you can transfer the license. Note: If you still have trial days left on the new computer, you will need to wait for the trial time to expire before you transfer the license or adjust your system clock to force the trial period to expire then transfer the license.

After I installed the MasterWorks update on my Vista computer, I no longer can see my guide rules along the edges of my design area. How can I get these back?

First, try rebooting your computer and check to see if the guide rulers are back. If that doesn't bring them back, then go to the C:\Program Files\Babylock\MasterWorks CFG.ini file and ensure the guideruler setting is set to 1. If not, change this setting to 1 and the grid rulers should reappear. Windows Vista follow the path given below:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Babylock\MasterWorks2\.
Open Cfg.ini and make sure GUIDERULERS are set to 1. If not, change this setting to 1 and the grid rulers should reappear.

Why did my design colors all change to the same color (black) after saving my BLF file as an original PES file (not PES 6)?

When a BLF file is saved from an older version of MasterWorks, the color information needed for saving to the original PES format is not in the file. When you save this older BLF file to the original PES format the entire design is saved as BLACK. Please update your MasterWorks to the current version available on our website download page. Then, if you open an older BLF file in the current build of MasterWorks, you can click each color (in sequence view) and reselect the same color from the PES palette. Save this new BLF file to preserve the color information when you save the original PES file from the updated MasterWorks.

I am having trouble reading some .wmf files in MasterWorks. Why is this?

Sometimes older files are converted to newer formats like .bmp files to .wmf files. While these files may have the .wmf extension, they are not true .wmf files as this is not the format they were originally created in. Because of this these files may not work the same way in all software programs. This is also true of other formats as well such as .ai, .eps, .jpg, etc...

Today when I opened my MasterWorks it is acting like I never installed a license. It worked fine yesterday. Is there something I can do to correct this?

A few things can happen to your computer that you may not be fully aware of. One of these things is an automatic update to the operating system (Windows), anti-virus software or firewall. It is not uncommon to have a computer set to perform these updates during the middle of the night so you may not always know when they happen. Occasionally, however, these updates can affect how some programs function. When this happens, there are a couple of things you can do to correct this.

1. Check the program settings in your firewall program to make sure MasterWorks is set as a trusted program. Some commonly used firewall programs are Zone Alarm, Trend Micro, and Windows Firewall. Consult the program manufacturer for specific instructions on checking and changing these settings.

2. An update could have caused the crypkey services in your computer to change. Correct this by going to the Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services. Locate the crypkey license in the list and double left click. Make sure the startup type is set to automatic. If the service status is showing it is started, stop it. When the service has been stopped, restart it. This will reset the crypkey license.

After completing these steps, if you are still unable to use MasterWorks, contact the help desk.
